Sometimes you may be faced with a full&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/homeguide.com\/costs\/chimney-rebuild-cost#fireplace\">chimney rebuild<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When Does a Chimney Need Rebuilding?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think a rebuild would involve a complete tear-down of the existing chimney followed by its entire replacement \u2013 brick by brick. That is not always the case. There are different types of rebuilding, and they each depend on the chimney&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partial Rebuild<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type is suggested when only a few individual bricks appear to be crumbling (spalling), cracked, or completely missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A partial rebuild may involve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Complete replacement if the chimney is small<\/li><li>Replacement of only the top few feet or courses (rows or layers) of brick in larger chimneys<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These repairs are entirely above the roofline and do not involve scaffolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Roofline-Up Rebuild<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a trusty chimney falls prey to brick spalling, vertical cracks, mortar joint damage, and other significant deterioration, this type of rebuild is usually needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire chimney stack must be taken down and built back up starting from the roofline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Total Chimney Replacement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A roofline-up rebuild might&nbsp;<em>seem<\/em>&nbsp;to be the most extensive \u2013 after all, the entire visible chimney is replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet chimneys connect the firebox to the outside world, and they do not start at the roofline. Severe structural damage can occur in cases of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Extreme spalling<\/li><li>A leaning chimney<\/li><li>Extensive mortar deterioration<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In these circumstances, there can be structural damage below and above the roofline, and a total replacement is required.
